Hai
Can we change master db compativity level from 90 to 80

No, and why would you want to. The master contains information specific to the operation of a 2005 server.

Absolutely not. Why you want to try this anyway?

Can you explain why you think you need to do this?
FWIW - I would think it is possible, since it will be in 80 compatibility mode after an upgrade where you have user objects in the master database.
Again, why do you think you need this? There really is no reason for this to be done on the master database.

hi,
it is becuase in case if we have to change back to 80. lets say if we have any user objects in the master db.

The master database controls the function of the server. It is not designed to emulate a SQL 2000 server, and all the structures in there will not necessarily work. It's by design.
Note, you should not have used objects in master. If you do, you'll need to rewrite them to work with 2005.

The only reason the master database is not set to 90 compatibility during an upgrade is specifically when there are user objects in that database.
In that case, the upgrade leaves the compatibility set to 80 so your user objects will still work. It is your responsibility at that point to make sure all user objects in the master database are compatible with 90 functionality.
I am still wondering what you mean by going back to 80 - why would you need to go back? If your user objects don't work in 90 compatibility you need to fix them, not modify the compatibility level to get around fixing the problems.
