Log file being used by SQL, but not showing up in sql

    I have a log file for a database on a share.

    When i look in the database properties-> files, the file is not listed as a db file. For this reason i thought i could move it without taking the database down.

    When i try to cut it though i get the "this file cannot be modified as it is in use by another process" error. If the file does not appear in the database properties, can it still be used by the database?

    Update: when i check the sys.database_files table, i can actually see the log file, its just not appearing in the database properties.

    This is no longer manifesting itself. I cant see that i was doing anything wrong, but i must have been.
