Expanding Microsoft Cluster by replacing disks with larger ones.

  • I have an HP environment with an MSA1000 running Windows 2003 Ent 64 bit & SQL 2005.

The MSA is full but I have the option to replace some disks with larger ones and recreate larger volumes (retaining volume and drive designations).

This may be an MSCS question but has anyone expanded DB storage in this way?

    Issues I know/envisage are:

    1) Cluster disk signatures and...

    2) ..useful ClusterRecovery tool to fix that is not certified for 64 bit OS

    3) OS seeing enlarged volume

I can't see that SQL much worries about the change if it is stopped during any changes and there are no drive mapping/location changes.

    Any thoughts on the above?

    Hi NikB,

Do you have the option of upgrading all disks?

    Thanks,

    Phillip Cox

  • Nope.

    Only some because of expense.

    ie looking at 4 x Raid 1+0 72Gb moving to 300Gb drives.
