SQL Srever 2000 authentication problem

  • I have SQL Server 2000 installed on a DB server placed on LAN. Authentication mode is set to mixed mode. Whenever i try to connect to this server through EM/SSMS i get following error and connection is refused

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Srever. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (Provider: TCP Provider, error: 0-No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)

If i connect to any folder or drive of DB server through windows browser by providing id and password when asked, then after that i does not get the above error and can be connected to server by EM/SSMS.

    I have verified that

SQL Server is set to mixed mode security

    Accepts remote connection

So how can i over come this problem?

  • Please put your problem in correct forum ...

    Thanks

  • You have to make an entry into hosts file for IP and name of server

    Thanks

You have to make an entry into hosts file for IP and name of server

What is meant by hosts file. For simple connection through administrative tool where i can use host file?

  • C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

go at last in the file and make an entry

    10.1.9.244 cic-nic-2

    Thanks

  • I will try this option. But my other servers are accessible through EM/SSMS without adding IP in said file. Can you provide any background reason for this problem?

  • If you have any Windows support people at your site, talk to them before you change the Hosts file. There are various options that can be used to make your server available to the network, and your Windows people will have their preferred choice. The problem may be a Firewall issue, not a Hosts file issue.

If you change the Hosts file without talking to your Windows support team, you risk things breaking in the future. For example, they may have all Hosts files under source control and your update will be outside this - when they deploy an update your changes will get lost.
