how can w etake backup of 10gb of database in to 5gb or less space in disc

that depends on how much data is present in the mdf and the free space. You can take a backup on disk and then compress it using utilities like winzip or winrar OR you can take a native compressed backup(if running 2008). Check out BOL for details.

The most possible way is tht YOu can try for backup to external sources.

first find out how much extra space is there in the db, shrinking it etc.

There are only two ways you might be able to accomplish this feat. First, if you running SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, you can use native compression during the backup. The only other choice is a third party backup tool that will do the compression on the fly, such as SQL Backup (RedGate), LiteSpeed (Quest), HyperBac (HyperBac), etc.
