Hi Experts,
I have a test database which is now on RTM (9.00.1399.06 RTMStandard Edition). I am testing the patching process now and wonder whether it is OK to patch it with SP3 (as SP3 is supposed to have all the CU's except the last few) directly rather than doing an SP1, SP2 and then CU#11, CU#12 and SP3?
Your guidence appreciated.
Thanks,
Philip

you can go direct to SP3. I would only apply any post SP3 CU's if you are experiencing the problems they resolve.

Just to clarify once again, as SP3 include the SP2 CU# upto 10,
if in case I get any error after the SP3 install (which has a solution included in 11 and 12) is it ok to apply 11 and 12 while SP3 is already present on the system? Or do I need to uninstall SP3? Is it possible to uninstall SP3 without any issue if that's required for applying 11 & 12 before implementing SP3 once again?
Thanks,
Philip

Philip,
Or do I need to uninstall SP3?
I haven't installed SP3 yet but have heard that you cannot uninstall once it's been applied.
Check out this http://www.sqlservercentral.com/articles/Administration/2960/ it may be of use.

You would probably want to apply CU1 for SP3 instead see url above.
As George has already mentioned I would only the apply updates if your experiencing specific problems.
Cheers,
Mark

service packs in 2005 cannot be 'backed out'. You would have to uninstall\reinstall SQL.
If you find you need fixes post the cut off point of SP3, you would not need to uninstall, you would be applying post SP3 CUs, as mark said.

Hi All,
I have tried to find the solution for my problem, but seems only me who got this problem. I have installed SP3 from RTM. The summary tell me it was successfully installed. However, when query the version still 9.00.1399. The weird thing, when I go to Add/Remove Program, under Microsoft SQL Server 2005, the SP3s are listed there (Database Service, Reporting Service, Tools and Workstation components)
My Server is using Windows 2003 SP2 32 bit.
Please advise. Thank you.
