Hi there,
Since yesterday I have trouble connecting to several servers from SQLMS and Enterprise Manager. I had no problem up until last friday, several changes have been made to the infrastructure within our company during the weekend. No doubt these changes are the cause of the problem.
Funny thing is: I can use PING to get a response from the server by name. I can register the server using the ip-number, and connect without problem.
I can also use a name like this as a registering servername:
servername.cname.companyname.nl
I can use mstsc to connect to the server with the servername as well. The network guys don't know(or at least don't tell) much. What could be the cause of this? Mind, this problem is for some servers, not all of them. Those problemservers are NOT behind a firewall or such.

Hi,
This sounds like a DNS issue. I'm not a network expert, but if that's the case, the link between the server names and the IP addresses has been lost. It could be just a case of waiting for all the DNS servers to propagate the new configuration round, but if I'm right, you can solve the problem right now by using server aliases in SQL Server. In SS2K5 you do this via the SQL Server Configuration Manager. Open it up, expand SQL Native Client Configuration and click on Aliases. Right click and select New Alias. Put the server name in the Alias Name field, the relevant port number and protocol in the Port No and Protocol fields and the IP address of the server in the Server field. You should be able to connect again.
Hope that does it,
Cath

Tnx Cath,
Did not link the Client Config Tool with this problem as a solution.
Now to find how to restore my Admin privilege on my pc, which also seems to have been taken away...:w00t:

this sounds like a DNS issue, check the local admin group on your pc for an orphaned SID (i.e. just a long GUID no domain\user details showing)
