SQL Server virtualisation

  • Hi All,

I'm really sorry for the vagueness of this question, I need to expand my knowledge on running SQL Server in a virtual environment, for example using ESX, so my question has three parts:

    1. What are your thoughts on running sql server production systems in a virtual environment on an ESX server?

    2. Is there any point to clustering SQL Server in this environment? My initial is thought is no because clustering provides hardware high availability...but i'm open to other suggestions

    3. I have searched the web, but I'm struggling to find much in the way of reading material to expand my knowledge and help my learning so if anyone has any good white papers, web sites etc that cover this please let me know

    Cheers

depends on the loading, some dont advise it but there are many successful virtualisations of sql servers, exchange servers, file servers, etc.

if using VMWare with HA option then clustering really becomes redundant. However, if your sql servers stay physical it is perfectly viable to cluster the physical box with a VM

  • The best Application I have found people using virtualization with SQL Server is to reproduce (duplicate) DEV/QA/TEST environments.

  • With VMware you really have to look at a lot of your processor and disk queues to determine if you are getting the perfomance you seek.

VMware is exceptional for web servers/file & print boxes, etc.

We are using PolyServe for SQL consolidation and it is far more flexible for our requirements. The biggest is that it provides HA in addition to virtualization.
