i'll be doing SQL 2005 hotfix and 2000 SP4 to win server 2003 failover cluster.
1. are reboots required or how can i avoid reboots if possible?
2. and is there anything you guys would advise me to do before apply hotfix.

1. I don't think you can avoid the reboot. Besides which, it would be better to reboot to ensure everything is going to work properly afterwards, now. You don't want to avoid a reboot now, only to have to do one a few months down the line and find the server won't come back up (not that that should happen, but hey - hope for the best, prepare for the worst).
2. Backup all databases (especially the system databases)! Make a note of the current SQL Server builds and ensure you have the SPs + hotfixes on hand to get back to that build level. Remember, the only way to reverse a service pack or hotfix is to reinstall SQL Server.
