Just a quick question on licencing (again) as I can`t deduce the answer from Microsoft.
I have 10 SQL servers licenced on a CAL model and 10 SQL servers licenced per processor (some 2000 and some 2005).
I have a PC with SQL tools on. I believe I can connect to the 10 per processor licenced servers with no issue.
To connect to the 10 CAL licenced servers I believe I need a SQL Cal. Do I need a single CAL or a CAL for each server that I connect to ?
Any help would be great.
Cheers

Simon,
CAL licensing model implies licensing client devices/users (depending on server product), i.e. endpoints; the number of target servers doesn't matter. That is, simultaneous connection of 1 client to several servers requires 1 CAL. Total number of CALs should be equal to total client devices or users that connect to the servers. You sould only worry about CAL's version - you can't use SQL Server 2000 CAL to connect to SQL Server 2005. If you use volume licensing, the higher version gives you rigth for lower version; as for retail products, please refer to EULA, since I'm not sure regarding SQL Server rules, but for several other products, retail licenses don't give you a right for previous versions.
Hope, this will help.
