Installing basic SQL Express (no advanced features) on Win2000 server as a local admin and getting the following "access denied" error:
Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
User: XXXX\Administrator
Description:
Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition -- Error 29528. The setup has encountered an unexpected error while Installing performance counters. The error is: Access is denied.
I have spent hours pouring over online doc.
'Have tried "Lodctr /r" from the run command.
There is nothing in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\009, and neither is "Disable Performance Counters" listed in the node above.
Has anyone seen this beast?

Have you checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/300956
Or
Try installing with domain admin rights if this is not a stand alone instance.

MJ,
Thank you for your response, and for posting the MS website. I was having trouble finding it again. That may be all that is left to us.
I had seen an article about domain admins as distinct from local admins (which you also mention). I didn't understand how that could make a difference, but we would have tried it, except that this dealer has a workgroup.
Thank you again. You have helped. Now we have a better record of which pill to swallow.
