Sql server browser service

    Hi,

    Can we connect to default or named instance through Management studio If the Sql server browser is disabled?

    We have default sql server 2005 instance on server ABC. In server ABC, the sql server browser services has been disabled. But still Iam able to connect to the default instance ABC from Management studio.

    and We have Second server XYZ, has named instance ins1.Here when I disable the Sql server Browser service, Iam UNABLE to connect to Ins1 from management studio?

    Why in One server its working and NOT working in other server?

    Do we really need to enable and start the sql sevrer browser service to connect to an instance from management studio?

    The default instance of SQL Server uses a known port (1433). The port assigned to a names instance is not known, or dynamically assigned. The browser service is what allows you to connect to the named instance without knowing what port it is connected to on the server.
