Database Maintenance Plan Backup job reporting failure

  • I have a database maintenance plan for 3 user databases. The database backup job has started reporting failure in the job history, yet in the maintenance plan history everything reports having completed successfully, and the backups files are fine and restore OK. All of the other parts of the plan are working fine.

The plan was running successfully until we had a catastrophic disk failure and I had to restore all the databases (including master, model and msdb) from backup - which all went without hitch. Everything else is running fine - including several other database maintenance plans.

Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

I'm tempted just to create a new plan to replace the old one and see if it will sort out the problem, but that won't be particularly satisfying - I'd like to know the reason too!

    Thanks in anticipation,

    Rachel.

  • Aha - I have just discovered what the problem was. After the recovery the permissions on the backup folder got changed (not intentionally), so the sql server account no longer had full control. It was failing trying to delete the old backups. The other plans use a different folder structure, which is why they were still working.

No idea why it didn't report this fact in the maintenance plan history though - I found it in the text log.

Funny how enlightenment comes only after you've posted the question to the world!

    Thanks again,

    Rachel.
