We have a old database server which we want to retire and move the databases onto a new SQL server. Unfortunately the application has the database server name hard coded in numerous areas and we can not pick up everything.
I was reading some time back - that we could configure server level alias? I.E, create an new alias and map it to the existing one. i was wondering, is there a reference how i could do this? Also if i create an alias and use the old server name - will this work?
Appreciated any feedback.
Many thanks,

You can create a DNS alias for the new server, that way when you try to access the old server it will be automatically routed to the new server
thank you

Thanks for the feedback.
Is it possible we create SQL Server Alias? First will it even work like DNS? If yes, appreciated if someone please share the reference on this.
Thanks,
