Good book on SQL 2005

  • Hi ,

I have been so focused on supporting our current SQL 2000 prod environment that I haven't had much time or exposure to SQL 2005. Can anyone recommend a good book on the admin end? Actually, a good book on any topic related to SQL 2005 would be helpful. Thanks!

  • I think any of the 2005 admin books are about the same, containing about 80% the same stuff. The Pocket Guides are cheaper and they have good info. I've avoided some of the MS Press ones because they are written often by people working off CPTs and they don't always get correctly or completely updated on the final release.

If you want to dig in, I can't recommend the Inside SQL Server series enough.

  • Here's a second on the pocket guide. It was the first SQL Server 2005 book I picked up and it was more than worth the price.

  • I realize MSPress was knocked, but I have been happy with the MCTS 70-431 training kit...

  • Always been a big fan of the WROX series - easy to read, yet detailed at the same time. I've hit the series as a noob going into SQL 2000 and as an advanced user in 2000 going into SQL 2005 and the series still was of great use during both phases of my career.

  • If you would consider yourself an experienced DBA, I would go for Professional SQL Server 2005 Administration

Brian Knight is one of the contributers and he wrote

SQL Server 2000 for Experienced DBAs

Both are really good if you are past the basics.

  • I completely forgot about that! The other contributing authors are no slouches either.
