hi guys in my sql server box i have the C:\ drive which contains the documents and settings ,program files, and windows folders and then my D:\ drive which contains my databases with the data and log files. My C:\drive is almost full only 10 MB left but i don't see why, when i go to the folders inside my C drive i only add up up to 5 GB when the total GB i could have is 13 GB, nothing new has been installed in this box, what can i do? should i defragment?

Check your drive for bad sectors because if your drive has bad sectors it will not be able to use that space.

you may want to download a program called spacemonger, if you download version 1.4 it was the last free version. this will show a graphical display of your files and you can instantly see which files are filling up your disk. treesize also does a similar thing.

Thank you, i am a little skeptical about installing third party software in the box, is there another way? , also i checked this morning and in my temp folder there is 15 MB. How do i check my drive for bad sectors?

its not an install, its simply an exe that runs, you dont install anything.

nice.... thanks! ok i did, my windows and program files taking total 15 GB, and then the pagefiles.sys taking 2,345,555,496 bytes..what can i do about that?. I heard also that it have something to do with the secondary memory reserved for this drive?.
Should i try defragmenting the C:drive? If so, sql server service, agent need to be off for this correct?

You know, you could be severely fragmented too. That'll eat up a lot of space.

im confused as to why spacemonger isnt showing the space correctly. Ive never seen it show an incorrect amount of free space, and by the sounds of it half your disk should be free. Is spacemonger registering the size of your drive correctly on the top bar?

yes it is, it is showing 17.3 GB total , 20.9 MB free. Does the Pagefile.sys have to be that big? i am running a windows xp with 1.99 GB of RAm. If so, can i move it to the D drive? Or maybe it is better for now just to move the C:\windows\temp (it is only 100 Mg) folder to the D drive for some space until i can add more?

how big is your page file currently?
May 23, 2008 at 8:49 am
around 2.3 GB, can i move the c:\windows\servicepacks to the d drive?
