Adding new instances to an existing server

  • Sql2005, SP2. Enterprise edition.

We have a server that's been up and running for some time. We want to add several new instances to this machine.

By definition, I believe the instance that already exists is the default instance... even if it has no "extension" to the server name (Back on SQL2000 some support gurus set up our SAN-connected server as SERVERNAME\instance1; this was after a week for what was quoted as an afternoon's worth of setup)

But if we add several new instances to this box-- say "Testing" and "Training" -- will any modification be needed to any app or code that connects to the default instance?

I think the answer is no... but need to confirm this before starting the process...

Cursors are useful if you don't know SQL

  • Theoretically adding an additional instance should not be reflected on the default instance.
