Query run locally run from the server itself takes about 2 minutes however when run from workstation takes hours and eventually dies with the following error -
any suggetions/advise greatly appreciated

If you're using ODBC to connect from the workstation, you might want to check this out:

What is the Windows version on the client? Check out these links;

If that is not your problem, follow these instructions...
On the Database Server
Right Click MyNetworkPlaces -> Properties
Right Click Local Area Connection -> Properties
Select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) -> Configure
Go to Advanced Tab -> Speed & Duplex
If the value is "auto"
Set the Value to -> 100mb full
