SQL Server 2005 Upgrade - Urgent!

We have a default instance and a named instance of sql 2000 on a box. We are planning to just upgrade the named instance first and do the default at a later date for business reasons.
I believe the default instance should not be affected and the databases should be working while we upgrade the named instance. Am I right or wrong?

You are correct, it should not be a problem just updating the named instance. however make sure you take a full backup of all your databases on both instances - just in case!

should be doable.

may I emphasize you need to start with SQLServer upgrade advisor.

It checks your sql2000 sb/server and will highlight issues you need to address before the move !

also keep in mind there may be unavailability (even for your default instance), so plan well !

We have run the upgrade Advisor and working with the vendor that provides the application to resolve any issues that need to be addressed.

One more question - this box also has sql server express installed on it - would that cause a problem? Again I would not think so, but just wondering if anyone had issues that we need to be aware of?

Should not be an issue, but if you're not using it ... you should remove it, or at least shut it down to conserve system resources.

Not to sound paranoid, my original question was especially referring to the availabilty of the default sever availability DURING the upgrade of the named instance. I believe you all answered me in that it would be available during upgrade, but just want to confirm

I've had some issues applying the servicepacks (and you need to apply at least sp2 + cu2 (cu5 or 6 if you can)) on client installations having SQLExpress installed during the visual studio 2005 setup.

Didn't pay much attention for it, because the instances were unused, so I uninstalled them and continued with the sp installs.
