KB921896

  • Hello eveyone.  I can't install SP2 on a 2005 SQL Standard instance.

The windows Installer MSI file will not install.  Does anyone know of

a work-around?  Thanks for everyone for being there to help.

    R.,

    Ed

  • What is the error? Check your windows event viewer logs and the SQL Server error log.

You could be trying to install the wrong SP2.

  • Thanks for the response Bill. The window indicates: "The following

unexpected error occured: Unable to install Windows Installer MSI file."

I've successfully installed this SP on my test DB bed. I've read microsoft's

KB and tried their workarounds without success.

  • Have you tried going back to Microsoft's website and downloading it again?

Are you trying to install it over a network?

Do you have the proper OS permissions to do an install?

  • sql rather splatters its installation log files (typically) at C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files\ and below.  i've often found clues to install failures there.  if you call microsoft that's the first place they're likely to send you.

  • Thanks for all the responses. One of the first things I did was try a fresh download of the SP. I’ve successfully installed the SP on a test bed, which is a replica of the production over our backbone using the same authentication. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

  • Did you disable all the sql services before doing the install?

  • Thanks.

Yes. Additionally I  stopped all SQL services and set for manual restart,

    then bounced the box.

  • <SOAPBOX ON>

I have spent about 25 hours so far on the phone with MS tech support because I can't install sp2 on a box.  The problem is that every damn thing in the world shoves it's crap into the boot partition (in this case the INSTALLER directory in windows dir).  That caused the boot partition to fill up.  Installer files were picked as the thing that had to go to get the system functional again.  And now, EVERY installer that tries to run that must first UNINSTALL something existing fails.  And apparently there ain't SH-T you can do about it.  It REALLY p-sses me off that so much stuff is shoved into the boot partition without your having any say about it.

I am not the only one to suffer from this.  There was a thread on one of the msdn forums about this too.

  • I feel you pain Bro. MS tech support is no stranger to me either. Are you

saying if I clean out the installer files, the SP install will work? If so do you

    know the directory path?

  • NO!!!! JUST THE OPPOSITE!  If you DO clean out the %win%\INSTALLER directory you will be HOSED!  And a LOT more than just sql server service packs will barf too.  Virtually all modern installs of any size seem to shove their crap into that dir.  And then any uninstall or upgrade that requires uninstall will fail.  I am currently at 5 different pieces of software that won't upgrade now.
