All,I signed on to my sql servers and noticed that there is a empty white circle instead of the green triangle or red square. I can run everything fine but when I right click, the option to start or stop the server is grayed out. Again, I can run scripts fine. What can this be? I've never encountered this before.
thanks

When you registered the SQL Servers, I'm assuming you did so with Windows authentication. Did your Windows rights change on the servers themselves? If you aren't a member of the administrators or power users group on the servers, you wouldn't normally have the rights to stop and start any services, to include SQL Server.

If your account is not a member of the local Administrators group on the target server, you may get this issue. KB 171862 describes this problem and gives a solution for NT4. We have tried the solution on our W2003 boxes but with no success.
