Data Files on SAN and Log Files on SCSI - OK???

  • Do you see any issues with the data (500GB) being on a RAID 10 SAN partition and log files being stored on SCSI drives?

    Thanks,   Dave

  • Thats pretty common. Thing to verify - SCSI disks - what kinda of raid? Is the controller battery backed for power outage? If you lose your Log files your probably in bad shape. Are the SCSI disks really any faster than the SAN disks (15K RPM, SCSI  controller cache, spindles in array...).

  • The SCSI disks will be 15k rpm in a RAID 10 and the controller will have as much cache as possible.  I've been told the SAN disks outperform the SCSI disks.  If we went with the SAN approach we would use RAID 10.  After discussing the issue this morning we are now leaning towards using the SAN for log files.  Our DR strategy for SCSI would have involved a replication product such as Double Take to replicate the log files to our DR location.  The cost of the Double Take license just for the log files appears to negate the cost of disks on the SAN.  We would then utilize the EMC replication tool that comes with our SAN to replicate both the data and log files to our DR site.

    Thanks,   Dave

  • You may want to review the network topology of the SAN. The SAN may be faster (typically you have way more spindles so writes can be broken up into small bits), but if the SAN space is shared with other apps that are flowing through the same backbone, you could be overwhelming the networking to the SAN. Thus negating any speed advantage of the SAN.

You may also want to read up on how your SAN backups are being handled. Ours relies on quiescing which creates some issues with 24/7 use, so we do not use it (disk to tape instead). But newer SANs are coming out that do not quiesce, so there is no disruption of service.

I also have multiple SANs and 1 was built for lots of storage with fewer big disks. And 1 was built for speed with lots of little disks. Of course 1 is more expensive to add to. So thats dollars, disks, network and a database to manage!

    Fun huh!
