Setup Fails: COM+ Check

  • XP Pro SP2 -- SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition Setup runs a System Configuration Check issuing a warning about the COM Plus Catalog Requirement

     * If SQL Server Setup fails, Setup will roll back the installation but may

not remove all .manifest files. The workaround is to rename the files and

then rerun Setup. For more information, see How to: Work Around COM+ Check Failure in SQL Server Setup.

I've read and applied the workaround document (How to: Work Around COM+ Check Failure).

I've used web search and have posted several times to newsgroups. I'm out of options and can't find which .manifest files that I'm supposed to rename and have no idea how to resolve this issue. Can you help?

  • There is a setupsql.log or something in Windows or sys32. Find the most recently modified files and it will stand out. That might help. Otherwise a $249 call to MS might be your best bet.

  • This issue has been resolved.

Load the URL [1] and scroll down the page or use Edit > Find to locate "Distributed Transaction Coordinator failed to start" Follow the procedure which throws an exception. To resolve and procede simply create a file in the root of c:\ as indicated in the error dialog.

Start a new instance of SQL Server 2005 Setup and all COM+ checks will pass allowing installation to procede..

  • Anyone have a copy of this posting labelled as [1] on CDalby's site. He apparently has changed his blog structure and the article is no more.

  • I'm having the same issue. Any updates?

  • I found the answer on an MSDN Forum thread, in this article:

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143698.aspx

Follow the instructions in the very first PROBLEM area. Fixing the Distributed Transaction Coordinator resolved the warning message.

  • I’m not sure this is the right place but here goes.

I am running into the same problem installing sql server 2005 on a windows 2008 cluster and I think I found the problem but I’m not sure how to fix it.

The resolution was to go into component server for the install warning

    ” COM Plus Catalog Requirement”

Component server comes up but when I click on computers it freezes solid. The only way out is to kill the process. Do I need to reinstall component services in windows 2008 and if how. I tried msdtc –uninstall and msdtc –install with no luck.

    Thanks
