New Server Hardware specification

  • Hi all,

We are planning to purchase a new server for SQL SERVER databases. This would be able to manage SQL Server 2005, replication and .NET Framework 2.0 with web services enabled configuration.

I would like to know about hardware requirements (brand/speed/RAM/HDD) that can support more than 5 databases of our organization with at least 3 GB data files each. Also responsible for backup and restore, emailing reports to clients (from SQL Server) and support  websites. We have different server for running IIS (websites).

I need an urgent reply/ links or the best way how to calculate hardware specification.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Your question is far too vague for a sensible answer. Try reading this book ( I know it's 2k but all principles apply )

    http://www.compman.co.uk/scripts/browse.asp?ref=450145

To be honest if you don't know how to specify a server then you shouldn't be tasked with the responsibility, sorry!

    Basic questions would involve

predicted i/o throughput, oltp/dss, availability, throughput, responsiveness, number of users, predicted growth, 64/32 bit, version of sql server to run ( this affects memory ), using instances , lifecycle of the server and so on and so on

Basically get the most you can, don't scrimp on disks and memory.

The most serious advice I could give is to go 64bit and dual core AMD cpu's ( minimum 2 ) choose a server that can take an additional 2 procs if required with a minimum of 8Gb ram , make sure your server can take more ram if required ( min 64Gb ) - this gives you a viable upgrade path without replacing the server and should give a good ROI.
