I am installing the Management Studio for 2005 on my XP SP2 PC. I have found that it requires that Visual Studio 2005 be installed as a prereq. There is an option for custom to install pieces and parts of this as well. I guess I don't fully understand why I have to have a 2 gig Visual Studio install on my PC to simply administer SQL Servers. Are there some specific pieces that I can install in Visual Studio and not the entire product ?

I feel that its required .net framework which will be installed by SQL 2005 Setup CD itself.
Where exactly did you find this information?

On the install DVD. It first wanted the 2.0 .net installed, that is fine then it said I needed Visual Studio installed and gave me options of full install or custom and stated the amt of space req. for the install.

if it finds VS2005 installed, it can add the components for SSIS (format dts), reporting server apps and the olap dev stuff.
Else it installs it all if you choose so.
