Because we have not had a good backup for a few days, I am trying to do a backup to disk right now, outside of the schedule. I want to create a new file, but I get an error message saying that my file is "not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set. BACKUP DATABASE is terminating abnormally."
1. What is BACKUP WITH FORMAT?
2. Why won't it let me add a new file that is not part of the 'family' ?
3. How does it get to be part of the family?

I triggered an automatic backup by changing the scheduled time for backup, so I think I'm safe, but I would still like to know how to do a manual one.

Have you still not figured this out? I am attempting to do the same thing in Server 2000 and get the same message. I'm trying to get a copy of this database by tonight to get to a third-party for testing in a hosted environment.

I did get it to work. Right now I don't remember exactly what I did, but I think the key was saving it to a file named using the exact format as the ones generated by the Maintenance schedule. And of course you have to have enough room on the disk. If anyone has anything else to add, I'd be glad to hear it.

I know this is an older thread, but I was searching for a solution to the same error message.

Not sure if this is what happened in your cases, but what I did was I had to backup files listed in the Destination by accident. Once I removed the second one I was able to run the backup fine.

Hi

I solved this issue by removing all paths that were listed in the "Destination...Backup to" in the first window that appears when you choose Backup DB.

In the next screens, you need to add/choose the destination path and specify the backup-file-name.

Hopefully it will work with you as well.
