Does anyone know the pros and cons with using Virtual server on a test and reporting environment? We need a test and reporting server for one of our apps and the server guys here are recomending using Virtual server...Thanks!

Pros: Your server guys will not need to dedicate you a stand alone server.
Cons: Keep in mind that your Virtual Server will be sharing physical resources with other Virtual Servers. This means that 1 physical server will be split up into Virtual Servers using some brand of VM ware. These Virtual Servers will then share CPU, I/O, Memory, and Network bandwidth. This usually leads to slower performance than a stand alone server (unless, of course, the server used for Virtual servers is a Hoss). I have found that, for reporting purposes, users expect fast turn around for reports and / or ad-hoc queries. Using the Virtual Server apporach will, more times than not, make your reporting move slower.

Performance also depends on what type of virtual technology you are using. For instance, VMware ESX server has tweaks not available in GSX or in Microsoft's Virtual Server. However, as John indicated, you will never be as fast as if installed directly on the physical server.
Other pros: Easier for the sysadmins to maintain. Easier to update (VM can be copied in a previous state making rollbacks a snap). Reboots quicker than a physical server. And if you're using VMotion technology on ESX server, you can also gain additional maintenance and reliability helps.
