Do I still need Business Objects??

  • I'm looking towards implementing analysis services.  Seeing the brown interface I'm starting to wonder if the BO solution we've used to query the dimensionally modeled raw data is till needed.  Is there a way for the users to use the Analysis services interface for cube navigation?

Thanks so much for any feedback!

  • Here is one way for users to use Analysis Services. If you want to dispense with Business Objects you'll need to look at Micorsoft Reporting Services in conjunction with Analyis Services. Business Objects and Crystal Reports are doing some merging of the two products so you'll need to look at the recommended upgrade path for your needs. If you have the budget and are happy with BO you may not want to change as still some valued added in the Business Objects/Crystal Reports solution. However Reporting Services/Analysis Services are hot on their heels and MAY be a more economic solution. Always run the numbers before deciding. Just my opinion for whatever it's worth.

  • I'm going to look all this stuff over.   Have you implemented such a solution?

Not yet but I am seriously looking at it. As a governmental agency we need to implement the Chevy and Ford solution, not the Cadillac and Lincoln. One thing some develop like is that Reporting Services is a lot like ACCESS Reports in its look and feel so the learning curve is less steep. And the Accounting and Finance people can get to the data cubes through Excel and they feel comfortable doing that. The biggest issue is in bursting reports to multiple users based upon information access permissions. I believe Business Objects/Crystal Reports may still be somewhat better at distributing reports across the enterprise. You'll need to do some research if you need to do that to find out the Microsoft limitations in that arena.

    Good luck,
