Drill through with Excel

  • I have enabled drill through on a cube and it works on the cube.  I would like to make it work also in excel.  Is there a way to do it?  If so can you give me some direction.  I have already downloaded to MS tools that did nothing

  • Have you tried using the Office Excel AddIn for Analysis Services?  The drill through on this definitely works and doesn't require you to do any coding (which if you're using some of the really old excel samples they did).  This really works best if you've got Office 2003 but will work on Office XP (I think).

Have you turned on drill through in the cube (ie within the cube editor) as well as within the role/s that allow you to access the cube?

Last question is are you receiving any error messages etc when attempting the drill through?

  • First thanks for the post. We are using excel 2002 and I have the Addin for Analysis Services installed.

I added the ability to drillthrough in the roles which was not in there before. Then I went to the cube through excel but when I am on the measure (Amount) and want to see the detail the option drill through is not enabled. This is off the menubar "Cube Analysis" Any ideas why?

  • Is the measure that you're trying to drill on a 'true' measure or a calculated member/measure?  You can only drill through on measures that are sourced from the fact table.

Can test this on a simple cube like Foodmart Sales?  Make sure that the drill thru is turned on within the cube and also at the role level.  Then when creating a report in Excel, the DrillThrough option (for me) is found by doing a right click when on the measure value for a row/column intersection and it's in the context menu.
