Are any major issues with restarting the Agent service on a production server? (it was done to get database mail up and running)
None of the SQL Server jobs were running at the time of the restart, but a co-worker argued that a restart could create some problems. I figure that if you restart a working Agent service, there shouldn't be any problems, unless there were already errors logged to begin with.
Hoping to get someone else's point of view on this.
Thanks!

I do not think there should be any problem by restarting the Agent service if none of the jobs were running or were schedule to run in between the time of restart.
I am assuming none of the jobs were schedule to run automatically when the agent start.
In you case the best bet will be to ask your co-worker as what types of problems can happens. If he comes up with valid problems then we all can learn.

Hi Amit,
Nice to hear your point of view. I verified that no jobs were running before restarting, and no jobs are set to run automatically when the Agent restarts.
The response I got from my co-worker was that a restart may cause problems if it doesn't start up again, but this didn't sound like a good enough reason for me. I pressed him for some reference to docs or a link on the Internet, but I haven't received it yet. Maybe tomorrow. The reason why this bugs me is that it almost sounded like I was being blamed for something that might have happened had the Agent service not restarted successfully.
BOL doesn't provide any warning regarding a restart of the Agent Service, so I'm just curious.

He may be correct in saying that the agent may not start but it is not a good enough reason for not restaring the agent.
If someone is suspicious that the agent may not start. Then LOOK INTO IT immediately. There should not be any excuse of ignoring that threat.
"it almost sounded like I was being blamed for something that might have happened had the Agent service not restarted successfully"
As I do not know how many years of experience you have but I will let you that happens to every one and you will be even blame for things you were not responsible

Hi Amit,
Thanks for your kind words. It makes me feel better.
