Double time full backing up a DB.

  • A few days ago, I got a power failure, then the time to backup my DB has

double in time. from 30 secs to 1 min 20 secs.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Have you checked the Windows Event logs to see if you have a hardware error?  It could be as simple as a bad disk that is causing the degredation.

  • Jason:

    Thanks for the answer.

Yes... I have checked the Event Log, and there were no Hardware errors.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Has the size of the database changed significantly? Bigger db, longer Backup time. I don't know that there is anything you can do to improve the performance of the backup. Make sure there is not an inordinate amount of free space in your database file.

  • If you have another server, try restoring the database there and then back it again to compare the differences in time between the two servers.  That should help rule out any hardware issues.

Are you using maintenance plans?  Have the options changed?  I'm thinking specifically of the options under the Integrity tab.

  • Nothing has change in the Database.

just the normal load of every day.

  • There are a number of things you might want to check

Size of finished backup file - are they the same ?

How do you back up - via a maint plan - if so try a backup without ( I never have liked maint plans and never use them)

It is possible for a process to block/slow a backup check for active and blocking processes during backup.

NTFS fragmentation can cause all sorts of problems - do you have sufficient free contiguous disk space for your backup - Is your data/log drive fragmented.

Have you run all the various db checks ( checkdb, rebuild indexes, update stats, no autoshrink on  etc.)

Is this backup to disk or tape ? I assume disk.

    That was the problem!!!!!!!!

    Disk fragmentation.

    I ran the O. S. defrag tool.

    Thanks a lot.

Now, I make backups in less time than before i got the trouble.

    Thanks again.
