during setup of log shipping, i get this error : unable to copy the initialization file during the log shipping maintenance plan setup. i found a microsoft article 811890 that address the problem with clustered servers but my issue does not involve clustered servers. i am using windows authentication and the <domain>\<account> has dbo and sysadmin privileges on the primary db. shares for the database and logs are reestablished with security access by the same domain account that is a dbo for the database.
does the log shipped database need to be setup on the destination server? I have tried it both ways and still a failure.
any thoughts as to why the initialization file wont copy

When you set up Log Shipping, did you select the option to create a new database on the destination server? If so, maybe there is a permission issue to copy the initialization file. Take a look at "Initialize the Destination Databases" in Books On Line. I have always restored a copy of the database on the secondary with standby and then set up log shipping and it works quite well. You may also want to read "How to configure log shipping (Enterprise Manager)" in BOL to make sure you didn't miss anything.

Linda, thanks for the ideas especially the 'initialize destination database'. I must have left something out because I did have log shipping working before but I lost a server and have had to restart the process all over. I also dont remember is I had checked the box to allow the reversal of roles when I first set up the system.
