Buffer Cache using W3K Enterprise SP1 & SQL Enterprise 2000 SP3

  • running above config. with 4 processors and 10GB RAM. Buffer Cache monitoring (Quest Spotlight) reports using a max of 1.8GB RAM for Buffer Cache. Question: why doesn' t the cache fill until the 10gb limit. Dynamic memory config used. I still see disk activity when non cache data is needed but the cache does not increase.

Vive Versa, when I was running W2K standard server with SQL 2000 Standard SP3, the Buffer Cahce would fill to the limit of 8GB using AWE/PAE.

Microsoft says that if I am running hot add memory I do not need to enable the PAE switch. Do I need the /3gb switch at all? I am runnning a DL740, 4 processors, 10GB RAM, hot add memory.

  • If you are not using the 64 bit versions of w3k & sql 2000, you have to use the /PAE boot switch and set the memory for sql server (fixed) in order to use 10 GB ram to their fullest.

See "memory, AWE" in the books online
