I've been on vacation the last week, visiting family in the Washington D.C. area, and trying not to work at all. It's been one of the rare times in the last 8 years when I've not checked on work, or had to prepare the editorials before leaving for vacation.
And it felt great!
Typically I've had to write editorials and stage newsletters for whoever is managing the site while I'm away. Other than a week in Mexico when an Internet connection wasn't available, usually I've managed to check email daily and answer questions on the site. I'll admit that I did log on a few times, but only because my kids had abandoned me to go visit grandparents and my nephews left for the beach. Without much else to do, I fell back on the old reliable laptop to see what was happening in the SQL community.
I guess I wasn't completely out of touch as I visited Andy Leonard and the Richmond SQL Server Users Group on Thursday night to give a presentation of The Modern Resume, the talk I've give to quite a few other user groups.
There were a few days that I felt the urge to check email but resisted completely. As a result, I managed to relax and recharge quite a bit, and I'm ready to get back to work and engage the community again. It's refreshing to get away for a bit, especially when I have some confidence that someone else is handling the work.
I haven't caught up with email and the editorials from last week, and I hope that they were enjoyable and thought provoking. In any case, since I missed the holiday, and am returning over the weekend, I have a blooper reel for you to enjoy today in place of the regular podcast. You can see it in WMV or iPod format below.
