Reporting services and Excel

  • Hi all

I am not a Reporting Services developer. We have a need to generate a report with all the WYSIWYG stuf(Headings, Fonts...Etc.) and be able to open it with Excel. I know, this is totally absurd . Out client not only wants the data (Rows/Columns) , they want it to look just like the fancy report.

We currently use Crystal Reports which is unable to support this requirement.

Does anyone knows if this is feasible in Reporting Services.

I checked the MS site, and could not find any description of this capability.

Any insight or if you can point me  in the right direction would be much appreciated.

    Michael.

  • If I understand the requirement, it's simple if the report is already defined in RS. From "Report Manager" if you chose to export to Excel, you get the tables and graphics elements in an Excel spreadsheet...

But note that the data exported in Excel starts its own life. No 'refresh' is possible from within Excel. To avoid this, and if there's no report definition in RS you'll well be fine in defining the report straight in Excel.

    Hope this helps...

  • One place that you can try out this Reporting Services functionality is the Cizer Quick Query online demo at:

    http://product.cizer.net/QuickQuery/CQQ/Default.aspx

If you build a simple report then click the Excel icon in the top toolbar, it will export the report to Excel for you. The Cizer product runs inside of Reporting Services, so you can expect the same functionality to work when you develop your own reports with Visual Studio and publish them to a Reporting Services site.

Just thought this might help illustrate the Export feature in Reporting Services...
