BI Naming conventions

  • Greetings,

Does anyone know of any good naming conventions for BI objects (cubes, dimensions, etc)?  I've been looking on the web and have found it difficult to find anything on this topic.

    Thanks,

  • These touch on the subject, Kimball's data warehouse toolkit goes into much greater detail on this subject.

  • I always run into issues as I have to name objects with the absolute in non-techie user in mind. Most database naming schemas won't work for BI end users. When I am asked to build a cube I work with a few of the users and build a template that includes all naming conventions for all dimensions and all measures. Since the end users are the one's who will be seeing the names and attempting to figure out what they mean, you should involve them.

  • I do BI for a living and I agree with bnordber. The users are the best source of naming conventions for BI deliverables. I've also found that different user groups use different names for the same things and it's not always possible to get them to agree on a single name (although that's always the best solution). In this situation, users rule.

  • I agree, the logical design you present to the user should be friendly, up to you how you do the physical design, sometimes it is beneficial to keep them the same, depends on your needs. A big mistake I see people make in cube design is to not name the measures appropriately, the user should not be able to confuse a measure with a dimension.
