The Best of SQLServerCentral.com 2002 - We Did It!

  • Well done on completing what must have been a very difficult task.

I hope it is a great success.

  • Hi

Judt wanted to ask - can you accept orders from overseas?

    Thanks

  • I think so - we dont have final shipping costs yet to know if it makes sense, but we'll try to get a copy to anyone that wants one.

  • Can you post a table of contents or a more detailed description of what is covered in the book ? Thanks...

  • What an exciting project! I'm anxious to see the final product. I'm sure it will become a favorite reference. Have we considered a searchable CD of the book that would be easy to travel with?

  • We considered a CD, but the cost and packaging logistics didn't make sense for us this time. We'll see about the future. Since this content is also online, it was a lower priority for us.

  • Andy,

I just placed my advance order. I am looking forward to receiving the ideas and suggestions of so many smart people. If it works out well, I hope this will become an annual publication.

    Keep up the good work.

  • I just placed my order. I'm looking forward to the book coming out and I hope it's a great success for all of you.

  • I dont have the .doc with me - it's around 60 articles, covers a bit of everything, perf/admin/dts/etc.

We're definitely hoping it will become an annual project. Only other thought we had was if we could hit the right price point to try putting it out as a quarterly type thing, maybe 3 hole punched to fit a binder. Dont know yet!

  • Hi Andy

Im using my aussie accent and saying.. "thats a bloody great idea mate". The quarterly release with a binder is a unique concept for IT orientated books. Worth investigating a little further.

    Cheers

  • Hey, thats pretty cool, posting with an accent!

With luck, it would need to be really big binder, we're hoping to run 200+ original articles a year.

Let me throw out some of the other ideas we had, see if anyone sees anything really good or really bad:

    - Build book on demand, either ebook or printed. Something similar to our virtual briefcase where you could gather up a bunch of articles you liked, select the order they would appear, then pay $.xx per article to have it generated with cover, table of contents, plus articles into either PDF or actually have it printed and shipped.

    - Pulling the best forum discussions into a book. Don't know how well it would read, but there is a TON of good information in our discussions.

We're open to other ideas too.

  • Great idea! So many SQL Server and other technical manuals available are far too academic, so the knowledge and experience of real-life DBAs and developers in commercial and working environments will be priceless.

And good idea to get people to sign up now so you know how many to order to keep costs done.

  • If you go with the binder idea, I have two suggestions that will keep costs down.

    1. Don't supply a binder.

Let the purchaser buy the binder of their choice. It will let them choose how to organize and maintain the documents.

    2. Sell it as an ebook.

The purchaser can decide if they want to print it in color or just black and white. They can decide what type of paper to use and also whether to print it single-sided or double-sided.

Using K. Brian Kelly's "Start to Finish Guide to SQL Server Performance Monitoring" as an example; I bought the ebook, printed off the pages, bought a really nice binder and some document sleeves and created a 'book' that meets MY needs. Everything is indexed and tabbed the way I need it to be and all the cost was mine.

Anyway you choose to do it, as a printed book, printed manual, printed pages, ebook, cd, etc. I plan on adding it to my library of SQL books. And I expect to get lots of use out of it.

  • I agree with SQLBill. I did exactly the same thing with Brian Kelly's ebook. Ebook format is fine with me, perhaps better, because I can add my own supplements.
