This is a completely novice question ... I need to know how to set up indexes on tables and views.

I would reccomend you search this site first, then check out some of these links below, then post more specific questions. it will save you time rather than wait for people to respond to this.

It is alright to be a novice, I am one also. Wrox has a good book "Professional SQL 2000 Programming"
Authors:
Rob Vieira
Michael Maston
ISBN number:
0-7645-4379-2
Published:
December 2000
Pages: 1424
Price:
US$ 59.99
He was able to explain indexing pretty well. There is a lot to it first of all you have to know about PK's and FK's. What I am doing to learn is I have found 2 books from 2 authors and from 2 different publishers and I have found 1 Guru that is not employed by my company this way I can ask him questions that if I asked someone at work they would wonder about me. Don't give up... These joins are giving me trouble but I will figure them out.

I've briefly looked through that book and it does seem good, I like Inside SQL Server 2000 by Kalen Delany as well.

Yes but the book of Kalen is not really for novices!
But of course it gives you a complete picture what is going on behind the scene.

IMHO 'Inside SQL Server' is the only decent book worth reading from MS Press.
