I keep getting the error 'Can't open dump device, device error or device off line.
The error log reports 'dbswritecheck:backup device failed to open operating system error=(null).
I'm trying to backup the database to disk using EM has anyone any clues to what is causing the error.

Be sure you have disk space. Also, I've seen this issue with v6.5 and if you delete the old file, it should then start working.
BTW, v6.5 is no longer supported from MS, I'd migrate off of it. Only commercial efforts (paid) support are there and nothing after next March.

Thanks very much. The problem actually was that the default directory the device was 'created' in did not exist!!
The device showed up in sysdevices so no idea what is going on there. I deleted it and re-created another in a directory that did exist.
