Can anyone tell me what SQL workfiles are? I know what worktables are, but I'm wondering what workfiles are?
Thanks,

Well I never heard of them. Where did you read them? I would say they are the data and log files of SQL (.mdf and .ldf), but I'm not sure.

only 2 references in BOL. One for the number created per sec, the other seems to link to the Index TUning Wizard. perhaps the server creates files when testing new indexes.

I'm interested in the one for number created per second. I'm using the SQL profiler and I'm seeing the SQL Server:Access Methods object counter, "workfiles created/sec". I'm curious as to what this means.

Are you recieving any values here? you might try checking the filemon (www.sysinternals.com) and see if there are physical files being created.
