Hi,
I have received a backup of a MDF file, which I am not able to restore. I suspect that the person has simply copied the MDF file, instead of taking the database offline. Is there any way to recover this database? There is a LDF file accompanying the backup.
Thanks & Regards,
Abhijit

If you have the mdf and ldf file, you can try attaching the db to your server. If your files are from a backup database sentence, then you must use the restore database sentence. If you have any errors, please post them back here.

If you recieved a MDF and a LDF file, I would have a hard time believing it was a backup, unless whoever it was named the backups that way....which I would believe was a bad practice to start with. And if so, and the database was not detached but just copied once the server was stopped (you couldn't copy them otherwise) they most likely won't simply attach, as they were not detached. I had a similar situation a few years ago, and we did finally recover the files, but to be honest, I don't remember how, right off the top of my head (It had to be painful, or I wouldn't remember it at all). I'll look into my archives and see if I can find my notes on it.
