I agree completely about the time spent. I am a VB programmer who does mainly data access. Most the VB certifications test on pixels, autoredraw, etc., in other words they contain too much test content on areas that do not concern your real job. I would much rather spend time reading and doing examples than cramming for facts that are not pertinet to my vocation.

I hear you. It's nice to know everything, but I think those days are gone! Thanks for the comment.

I agree ! In the UK they only care about experience, although the certification does help been considered for an interview, on some occassions, but this is not common. As you said it, takes up a lot of ones time and money and is it worth it ?

I'd argue that it is. You never know when you will be asked to do something. There are lots of NT items I was tested on and never used, but there were some I learned for the test and later I had to actually do it. Larning it the first time helped me remember that I could do it.

Sure. One of the tricky things to test is someones ability to figure out something that they DON'T know. Can I tell this Steve guy to take a look at the file scripting object and come up with a way to FTP files out of a folder that match a given extension? Not on the test, but you'd hope that your average to good DBA could figure something out.
Something to be said for being well rounded. What I find difficult is knowing how much time to put into a given subject.

Who'd want to use the FileSystemObject with ftp?

Great topic, Andy and Steve!
I am also an MCSE and MCDBA. And just like Andy I started studying for Windows 2000 exam (240 -- Accelerated). But then I realized how much time it would take me to prepare and how many other books and articles I would miss. After thinking for a while, I decided to drop out of MCSE rat race and concentrate on being a good MCDBA. It took only one relatively easy Win 2000 Server exam to upgrade my certification (and then MS announced that they are not going to retire NT4.0 track after all ).
I agree with Andy that with the amount of new technologies in Win2000, it is impossible to learn everything. It is better to concentrate and try to get good at something specific. So I put my "Win2000 Accellerated" exam book on the shelf and started reading "SQL 2000 Admin 911" by Brian Knight instead .
