Unable to start service

  • Hi,

I'm brand new to Analysis Services...

I installed Sql2000 on a test machine (NT sp6) and now installed Analysis Service on the same machine using the local admin account. However the service for Analysis Service fails to start. The error states:

%1 is not a valid Windows NT Application.

It looks to me that %1 is a parameter but that that parameter (in a call to an exe?) is not correctly replaced somehow..

    Any help is greatly appreciated!

  • %1 is a replacement position. I would suggest try uninstall Analysis Services and reinstall first to see if the install flaked. Then if same problem let us know.

  • Antares,

I already reinstalled three times. And every times the install itself seems to run ok.

    Thanks for your fast answer!

  • Ok try this. Open Services Control Panel and find the Analysis Services item. Right click and choose properties. There you will find path to executable, open Windows Explorer and drill to the location in the path. There find the executable and right click on it, choose properties. Now the key to a corrupt executable is when properties is opened the Version tab is usually missing. If missing then open Search and do a file search for the executable name. Usually after an install the temporary files setup for the install may be available. If you find a second copy of the file then rename the bad one and copy the other over to the path of the bad one. Right click the copied one and make sure you see the Version tab. Now try to start the service and if doesn't work initially you may need to reboot. See if that gets rid of the problem. (Note even if the Version tab shows fine on the current executable follow the steps to make sure not just a fluke).

  • As I'm on NT I can't follow the suggested path, but via the registry I found out that the exe is msmdsrv.

The version tab is there. I can't find second copies on the system (or install cd).

Another thing I noticed is that when using the task manager ->Applications select Analysis Service, right click -> go to process I end up at the process called mmc.exe. Which is the Microsoft Management Console. Does this exe call another (as a kind of snap-in) exe which should be msmdsrv?

May be the problem lies there? Can I check which exe mmc calls for analysis server?

  • Some more 'news'.

When I run the exe msmdsrv.exe via the Run I get an error in the event log stating: Server

  • The error "%1 is not a valid Windows NT application" should have abit more too it. Something similar to this: "DCOM error: %1 is not a valid Windows NT application", I need that bit to try and narrow what is yelling.

  • Antares,

I can't find any more info, I'm afraid.
