I have a problem with restoring a backup with Veritas.
Description: we backup the db and try to restore it on another server. If I try to restore the master db, the sql server becomes corrupt and doesn't want to start anymore. I think the problem is that my servername is somewhere within the master db. So if I try to restore to another server (with a different server name) it is not working. I need my master db because a user is needed for the actual database I want to restore (Livelink). Does anybody know a workaround or a solution to solve my problem.

Your best bet is to check with Veritas. However when the name of a server differs from that SQL has stored it usually will not corrupt. I personally do straight SQL backups or transfer the files with SQL offline and have not had any issues here and I have never used Veritas. You may want to rethink you backup stradegy if Veritas doesn't have an answer.

Swen,
I happened to have an issue with Veritas this week. Veritas does not like to restore to a different server. Software limitations? Maybe.
I spoke with Veritas and they gave a bunch of reasons, but none of them a valid one. The bottom line, Veritas restore only to the native SQL instance.
My case was a little different, but I found out, the hard way, that Veritas does restore only to the same SQL Server where the db is located.
I had to go the same way Antares is recommendeing. Now, we are setting all backup plans differently that the ones we had before this incident.

Hi Ploster,
Am I reading your situation right?
You try to backup and restore your working database to another server, find you have no logins and then try to solve the problem by doing a backup/restore of your master db?
There's an article on this site that may be what your looking for.

Hope this helps

We use backup exec extensively and have successfully restored sql databases to different servers.
Backup exec has a redirection tab used to tell the system what server to restore to and what database on that server to replace.
