Hello,
I have a SQL Server 2008 R2 instance with user accounts, admins, set up for TCP/IP, enabled to connect remotely.
On another server, I have Tableau installed and when I try to connect to the server with SQL Server installed, I constantly get this message:
"An error occurred while communicating with the Microsoft SQL Server Database. Unable to connect to the server. Check the server is running and you have access privileges to the requested database." SQL Server agent is running for this instance, and we are using Windows Authentication.
I show the details, and I see this message:
"Database error 0x8004005: [DBNETLIB][ConnectinoOpen (Connect()).]SQL Server does not exist or access denied"
"Unable to connect to the server. Check that the server is running and that you have access privileges to the requested database".
I followed this URL and everything seems fine with the connection, so I'm confused on what else to try. I'm not a DBA, and am trying to get the Business Intelligence up and running.

This has been resolved. Windows Firewall was blocking the servers from communicating after pinging the server.
We shut down the firewall and selected a new Port to allow the servers to communicate while having the Firewall running. After that, we could select the server, the IP address and the local server address and all connected successfully.
