Just recently my Business Management Studio (SS 2005) has been crashing regularly. It's been flakey for months, but it's finally gotten to the point where I almost can't use it at all and I think it's time to reinstall it.
I have the installation disk -- but how do I go about this? As I understand it, if I "X" out the things I have already installed in the setup, it will deinstall them. So I don't want to "X" out the Reporting Service, Database Service, Analysis Service, etc.
However, if I don't "X" them out, will they reinstall the entire database? I feel I can't take that chance.
Should I just "X" out the Management Tools, and then it will deinstall them, and then run it again and don't "X" anything out, and it will install whatever is not already installed?
Has anyone had experience in reinstalling the Management Studio alone?
Thanks,
Cynthia

Hi Cynthia,
You have that process correct. Recently I had to do the same to fix a quirky behavior issue in SSMS (thankfully it wasn't causing a crash). Just uninstall Management Tools, then run again and install just the Management Tools.

Thanks Wayne -- but just to make sure, after deinstalling the Management Tools, how do I reinstall only the Management Tools? Will it automatically install ONLY the components that are not already installed, or do I have to do something special?
I am terribly afraid of accidentally reinstalling everything, and wiping out my whole database!
Thanks,
Cynthia

Component tools have a separate checkbox from the database engine. Just select ONLY the component tools, and that's all that will be installed.
