SP2 on newly added cluster node

  • Hi All,

I have created SQL 2005 cluster with sp2 on one node and created all databases, after that i have added second node in the current SQL cluster by choosing the SQL server 2005 repair options in the add/remove programs in the control panel and added the node.Everything was fine.i can able to failover to newly added node. After that i have run SP2 setup in newly added node, evrything got updated to SP2 except database services.stating that this installation should run in the active node. The product level of newly added node is showing RTM version.

Now my question is how can i do the SP2 installtion in the newly added node in a safely manner because i am having 500 GB of data in the sql server cluster..

Please post ur suggestions on this

  • The second node would have added while creating the cluster only.

    1.

    Take all user databases backups.

    Take all system databases backups.

    move to active cluster node.

just install the sp2 on node 1 it just ignores as the binaries already in sp2 and updates sp2 on node2.

    or

    2

What i would have done is.

    Take all user databases backups.

    Take all system databases backups.

    move to active cluster node.

    remove the sp2

restart both nodes now both nodes are in rtm version.

install sp2. since the sp2 is cluster aware both nodes binaries should have updated properly.

do a failover to node2 verify the version

and failback and and verify the file version.

In clustered environment it is always good to choose the primary nodes for installation.
