"is it possible to have the read only database/snapshot on another server "
Yes.
"How often does the snapshots have to be done/can it be real time"
The idea of a reporting server is that reports are generally run on historic data; say you want to know last years, last months or last weeks reports for example.
The frequency of the snapshot is determined by the business requirement - ask them how new the data needs to be, up to and from what dates, what timeline, retention etc.
If you need it in real time you should be reporting off the transactional server and increase resource capacity to cope.

One point to remember for reporting is that snapshots use more resources as records are only copied when they are modified. Also snapshots cannot be backed up, not good for your historical data.
They are useful if you want to pull all your reporting figures into a reporting database and you want to run the import from the backup database, then you could create the snap shot when you pull the data, copy the data and drop the snapshot at the end.
