SQL Mail-->doesnt fire..Just sit in Inbox..

  • Hi, All

    I configured for SQL MAIL and SQLAgent Mail to send out notification..

    This is what I do..

    1. Create Network ID(Email Acct as well) and give local Admin priviledge

    2. SQLServer service and SQLAgent Service are running under this acct

    3. Setup Outlook profile based on POP3 and STMP setting.

    4. Setup SQL Mail and SQLAgent Mail and SQLServer Mail profile setting.

    Tested -->OK

    1. From the Outlook2002, I dont have any send/receive mails issue.

    2. From EM, tested in SQLAgent Mail and SQLServer serversetting and SQL Mail-->All of them are OK with successful message.

    From the Query Anlyzer-->Ok

    1. Use master xp_startmail

    2. xp_sendmail 'valid email address','contents of notification'

    3. xp_stopmail

    Issue..

    1. First of all, I dont get any email notification (I send to myself from query analyzer)

    2. When I open outlook(server), email that I initiate is sitting in the inbox..(I dont know why that is sitting in inbox) I wait for a while but that doesnt fire to send..

    3. When I pick and click "Send", I get email notification in my inbox which I send to by query analyzer..

    Any Idea?

    Thx in advance

    Jay

  • 1.  With the introduction of SQL 2K the checkbox that says "save in sent"..  no longer works.  A change was made to the dll's.... (frustrating trust me I know)

    2.  With Outlook 2k2 OR Windows Server 2k3 you again have to have Outlook open to send mail.  Friend of mine ran across this problem.  Windows 2K and Outlook 2K no problems with having outlook closed.

    Basically with the newer applications/OS you have to go back to SQL 7 days and make sure Outlook is open to send..   I hope this is fixed with SQL 2K5....

    What?

    I have a mix of Win 2000 and Win 2003 with Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003. And I mean all permutations thereof. And no I don't leave the service account logged in running Outlook.

    There are some pitfalls if you don't use latest SPs of Outlook.

    1. Make sure your Outlook is patched with the latest service pack.

    2. Ensure SQL has SP4 or at least hotfix 922 for SP3a. There is a fix for SQLMail within this hotfix http://support.microsoft.com/kb/833045/ which really bugged me for ages

    Also check the KBs on SQL mail:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315886

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;153159

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321183

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;263556

  • if you can use Outlook 2000.  It doesn't need to be open for sql server to send mail.  Do a custom install and make "unavailable" everything except Help.
