The service did not start due to a logon failure

  • Hi,

After rebooting my SQL server I got this message: "The service did not start due to a logon failure".

The service starts under a domain account because of using SQL Mail.

After the Reboot I did the following: I set the same password again for the service under Administrative Tools / services and afterwards I also set the same password in the Enterprise Manager. This solution is also recommended in the Microsoft knowledge base. After a next reboot I got the same message and SQL server is down.

Has anybody any suggestions on that problem?

  • what operating system are you running on ?

has this problem just recently started happening and it was fine before ? or has it been since you changed the account?

  • Attempt to log on as that username/password combo at the SQL Server itself. Also, check the event logs to ensure you don't have any "Domain Controller can't be reached" errors or things like that. Has anything changed on the system in question?

  • The SQL Server is running on windows 2000 standard server. In the event viewer I have also this message:

Logon attempt with current password failed with the following error:

Logon failure: the user has not been granted the requested logon type at this computer.

    thats all.

  • Is your SQL Server in an Active Directory domain? Do you know if there is a group policy set?

  • Yes, the server is in an Active Directory Domain and there should be no special group policy set but I'm not sure.

  • Check with your admins for the user rights settings. Make sure they don't have specified values for Log on as a service. If they've set something in any of the policies that apply to the SQL Server (domain policy or OU policies), that would explain the problem.
